What is Appendicitis?
Appendicitis is the inflammation of the appendix, a small tubular structure at the junction of the small intestine and the beginning of the large intestine on the right side of the abdomen. Although the appendix may seem functionless, it may play a role in the body’s defence against bacteria. It helps boost the immune system by storing beneficial bacteria, which can assist in fighting infections when harmful bacteria overwhelm the body’s defences. When the appendix becomes inflamed, surgery is typically required to resolve the condition.
What are the Causes of Appendicitis?
Appendicitis can occur due to an overwhelming infection caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasites. It can also result from food particles that form stones, blocking the appendix’s lumen, or, though rarely, from tumors.
